New Cameron UMC Prom Closet Ministry Coming!

Most high school young ladies dream about finding that perfect dress for prom that sets off their beauty and personality. But looking and feeling beautiful for that special night at prom usually comes with a rather hefty price tag that some families simply cannot afford, leaving many unable to attend. Our young men sometimes fall into the same category – suits and tuxes are expensive too! We hope to change all that! With the help of a very generous church family and our community at large, many of those young men and women may now have the opportunity to experience their fairy tale dreams with an exquisite dress or ensemble at no cost to their family.

The Cameron UMC Prom Closet is a NEW church ministry coming to CUMC for 2020 and beyond. Donated clothing and accessories will outfit our young people in need for the 2020 prom. Accessories such as jewelry, shoes, handbags, wraps, ties, and cumber buns will complete their look. At this time (June 2019) we are just beginning to receive donations with the expectation of assisting at least 50 young people next year!

Who is this for?
This is open to all high school students from anywhere! We hope to serve young adults from our own community as well as any others that need assistance. At this time, it is unknown how many may need this ministry, but we hope to add some gorgeous outfits to our collection from which to choose. The only requirement is that each recipient be present to select his/her attire and accessories.

When is it?
2020 dates and times will be determined after Christmas break.

Why was the Cameron UMC Prom Closet created?
The Cameron UMC Prom Closet was created to provide young people with a unique and exciting prom shopping experience! CUMC is dedicated to helping these deserving young men and women shine their brightest and look their absolute best for prom! We can’t wait to see the look on their faces when they find that perfect dress or suit – that is what it is all about!

How does it work?
CUMC will collect dresses and other attire as well as accessories throughout the year. Young men and women can call 816-632-3461 after January 1st to make an appointment to shop. Once a person has selected their attire, they can try it on in a dressing room and then visit the boutique to look for accessories.

Where are the items from?
Community members, businesses, organizations, and local groups may donate suits, tuxedos, dresses, shoes, wraps, jewelry, handbags, and other accessories for this annual event. We hope to have brand new items, too.

How many do you hope to serve?
2020 will be our first year. We hope to provide a dress for every young person that is in need. We are counting on substantial donations from church and community members, local groups, corporations, and businesses.

Where do people need to go?
Donations are accepted at the church office at 201 N Pine Street, Cameron, MO 64429 Monday-Thursday 8 am – 12 noon and 1-4:30 p.m. and Sunday mornings 9-11 a.m. Online giving is also available on our website at

The Cameron UMC Prom Closet is conveniently located in the heart of Cameron. Dates will be set in early 2020 for shopping appointments. Check back here and on our Face Book Page (Cameron United Methodist Church) after Jan 1 for details as they become available.

What can I do to help?

Go through your closets today! The Cameron UMC Prom Closet needs your donations to make this a reality for our young men and women. Gently used prom dresses or other elegant dresses, outfits, suits, tuxedos, shoes, purses, wraps, jewelry and other accessories can all be donated to the Cameron UMC Prom Closet.

We invite individuals and organizations alike to donate money to support the cause as well. Staff shoppers will be tasked to find bargain deals at clothing and shoe stores too.

Those with sewing skills will be in demand to assist with fittings and/or alterations to ensure a perfect fit. All of our staff are Safe Sanctuary Certified and we respect each young person’s personal privacy. Call the church office at 816-632-3461 if you would be willing to help with this important aspect of the Cameron UMC Prom Closet ministry.
